Children's eye exams
Children don't always say when something looks wrong. A parent stays beside the child, and the doctor explains each step in plain words, in English or Spanish.
Your child's glasses, if they have them
A favorite book or toy for the waiting room
A note from the school nurse, if there was one
Your vision and medical insurance cards

Plan on about 45 minutes. Babies and toddlers: call us first, and we will tell you what the visit can include.
We ask the parent what they have noticed, such as squinting or sitting close to the screen.
Pictures and shapes at different distances show how your child sees.
The doctor checks how the eyes move together and how healthy they are.
We explain it to you and to your child, and you get a copy of any prescription.
A school-age exam is usually a vision plan visit. See How fees work for the rest.
A routine exam is billed to your child's vision plan.
A visit for a red eye or a follow-up is billed to medical insurance.
We tell you the fee before the visit starts and give you a written estimate on request.

Many families come before kindergarten and then every year or two. Come sooner if your child squints, rubs their eyes a lot or sits very close to screens.
