Eye exams
An exam looks at how well you see and how healthy your eyes are. It is for anyone who wears glasses or contact lenses, and for anyone who doesn't and wants to know where things stand.
Your current glasses and contact lenses
A list of the medicines you take
Your vision and medical insurance cards, if you have them
Sunglasses, if your eyes will be dilated

Plan on about an hour. If your eyes are dilated, they may stay sensitive to light for a few hours.
We ask how your eyes feel and what you use them for, at work and at home.
We measure the glasses you wear now and ask how they work for you.
You look through the phoropter, and we ask which view is clearer, one or two.
The doctor looks at the front and the back of each eye. Some people have drops that widen the pupil.
The doctor explains what was found and gives you a copy of your prescription.
How the exam is billed, in short:
A routine exam is billed to your vision plan.
A visit for a red eye, an eye health check or a follow-up is billed to your medical insurance. Many visits include both.
We tell you the fee before the visit starts and give you a written estimate on request.

Many adults have an exam about every two years, and every year if they wear contact lenses or have a family history of eye disease or diabetes. The doctor sets the schedule that fits you.
Sometimes. The doctor tells you why before the drops and what to expect afterward. Bring sunglasses.
